  3.    A Time to Listen

  5.    It is difficult to believe that the loon's incredible range of sounds 
  6. come from a simple organ, the syrinx, in the lower part of the 
  7. windpipe. So much music, so much meaning. Is it all territorial 
  8. instinct or could loons be calling, partly at least, to express joy? I've 
  9. never counted calls during a frenzied evening chorus. Each loon must 
  10. call hundreds, if not thousands, of times. Could each call have a 
  11. biological function? Most scientists would answer "yes", "probably" or 
  12. "we don't have adequate data."

  14.    A traditional Ojibwa, Delores Bainbridge, would answer the 
  15. question with a definite "no." She hasn't studied loons, but she knows 
  16. loons. When an undisturbed loon, for no apparent reason, holds forth 
  17. with a half-dozen beautiful wails, she knows that the loon is talking 
  18. not only to other loons, but also to every other animal, including 
  19. human, willing to listen. Humans in particular should listen carefully. 
  20. In 1939, Edward H. Forbush suggested the loon's call seemed
  21. "...wailing and sad as if he were bemoaning his exile from his forest 
  22. lake." Little did Forbush know that about half of a century later, 
  23. loons would be missing from many of his favorite eastern haunts. It's 
  24. time to listen.
